Biman's maiden flight on Dhaka-Medina route takes off

Dhaka : Biman Bangladesh Airlines commenced direct flight from Dhaka to the holy city of Medina on October 28.

M Mahbub Ali, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism inaugurated the Dhaka-Medina flight BG 37 by cutting a ribbon at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1pm.

Speaking on the occasion, the State Minister expressed hopes of operating international flights to new destinations such as Manchester, Tokyo, New York, Colombo and Male by 2020.

The maiden flight to Medina departed Dhaka at 1:15pm on October 28 carrying 254 passengers on board. The flight reached Medina at 5pm on the same day.

The return flight BG 38 arrived in Dhaka with 107 passengers on board at 4:25am on October 29.

Biman deployed its newly purchased Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with a capacity of 271 seats, 24 in Business and 247 in Economy, to operate the flights to Medina.

With Medina, the number of international destinations of the flag carrier is now 16. The State Minister informed that the government has taken the decision to establish direct air connectivity with Medina because of the increasing number of pilgrims.

He further mentioned that new route will also benefit a large number of Bangladeshi expatriate workers who are residing in Saudi Arabia.

The national flag carrier is operating on the Dhaka-Medina route three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Md Mohibul Haque, Secretary of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Air Marshal (retd) Muhammad Enamul Bari, Chairman of Biman Board of Directors, Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman, Chairman, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and Mokabbir Hossain, Managing Director and CEO, Biman also spoke on the occasion.

Also, the airline will fly on the Chattogram-Medina-Chattogram route every Thursday.
