Biman removes two engineering officials following negligence over leased aircraft

Dhaka: The national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines has removed its two high ranking Engineering officials from duty because of their negligence over two leased aircraft. The decision came in a meeting on September 3 at Biman’s headquarter.

Failing to maintain two Boeing planes leased from EgyptAir, Captain Khandokar Sazzadur Rahim, Director (Engineering) got his contract cancelled and Gazi Mahmud Iqbal, Chief Engineer got suspended.

Md Mohibul Haque, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism said, "Biman leased two aircrafts of Boeing 777-200 ER in 2014. According to the lease, Biman was set to pay BDT 47.02 million, including all maintenance costs, to EgyptAir."

However, both the aircraft was found unfit to be used under the supervision of the two officials, the Secretary added.

Md Mahbub Ali, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism also expressed disappointment when he inspected and discovered the two aircraft in dissatisfactory condition earlier this year.

The ministry then opened an inquiry, which eventually found the officials guilty.
