Dhaka: A high-level business delegation led by Peter Fahrenholtz, German Ambassador to Bangladesh, proposed to set up a plant in Bangladesh to assemble BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars.

The visiting German business delegation placed the proposal while paying a courtesy call to AHM Mustafa Kamal, Finance Minister of Bangladesh at his ministry office in Sher-e-Banglanagar area on September 9.

Not all parts of the BMW and Mercedes-Benz cars will be imported from abroad, some will be manufactured here for assembling cars, the delegation proposed to the Finance Minister.

Mustafa Kamal said, “It is a good proposal as we will not have to import such expensive cars from abroad if they set up the plant.”

The dignitaries arrived in Dhaka on September 8 for a five-day visit to discuss trade and commerce with Bangladesh. German Asia-Pacific Business Association and Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry jointly organised the visit.

The delegation comprises representatives of all the sectors – textile, furniture, shipping, environment, banking, tourism etc. They will meet government high officials of Bangladesh as well as leading Bangladeshi and international companies with a view to exploring more business opportunities in the country.
