Dhaka: All the young, senior and retired pilots of the country got together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh Airline Pilots’ Association (BAPA) on November 5 at Hotel InterContinental Dhaka.

In 1969, pilots of the then East Pakistan decided to detach themselves from Pakistan Airline Pilots Association under the leadership of Capt Alamgir when the father of the nation Bangabandhu called for autonomy. But their appeal for registration was denied by the Pakistan government.

Therefore, the pilots were forced to take shelter of the law. By the court’s order, on August 15, 1970, East Pakistan Airlines Pilots’ Association was formed, said Capt Shahab Uddin Ahmed Bir Uttam, one of the founding members of the association.

After the liberation, East Pakistan Pilots Association was renamed to Bangladesh Airline Pilots’ Association (BAPA) and got affiliation from Bangabandhu as a government registered Association. From 11, today the number of members stands to 175.

Capt Mahbubur Rahman, the current President of BAPA carried out the welcome speech at the ceremony. He said, “BAPA has been contributing to Biman’s modernisation from the very beginning. And we will continue to do so in the future.”

Jack Netskar, President and Ishtiaque Hossain, Executive Vice President Asia Pacific from IFALPA were present on the occasion, among others.

The event saw BAPA commemorate the founding members of the association where Capt Jack Netskar handed over crests to them.

“We are here today to celebrate the achievements of BAPA. It is commendable how such an association, through voluntary work, has been contributing to make the sky safer and the aviation industry more secure,” said Jack Netskar.

The ceremony was also attended by Md Mahbub Ali, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, Shahriar Alam, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Air Marshal (retd) Enamul Bari, Chairman, Biman Board of Directors and Mokabbir Hossain, Managing Director, Biman.
