Dhaka: Pakistan suspended all international flights from March 21 till April 4 to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus as the number of affected cases rises in the country, a Civil Aviation Authority official said in a statement.

Prior to the announcement, the government also suspended all international flights operated by the flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines for a week.

“After carefully examining all options, the Government of Pakistan has decided to suspend operation of all international passenger, chartered, and private flights to Pakistan, effective from March 21, 2020 (2000 hrs local time) to April 4, 2020 (2000 hrs local time),” the statement added.

The move follows government measures aimed at preventing the increase of coronavirus cases in the country, which have reached 536 with four confirmed deaths.

The railways also announced the suspension of 42 trains to the southern Sindh and southwestern Balochistan provinces – the two worst hit by coronavirus – effective March 22.
