We need more connectivity from Bangladesh

Dhaka : Nepal needs additional connectivity from Bangladesh to enable more and more Bangladeshis to visit the Himalayan country.

Diwakar B Rana, Senior Manager, Tourism Marketing and Promotion, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) said, only Bangladesh Biman is now serving Kathmandu. We are optimistic that private sector airlines from Bangladesh will fly to Nepal.

We are trying to get our national carrier Nepal Airlines to operate to Bangladesh as well. We would then be able to get better connectivity in the days ahead.

Diwakar B Rana said this while talking to The Bangladesh Monitor on the sidelines of NOVOAIR Dhaka Travel Mart-2019 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka.

The government and the private sector of Nepal are working very hard to build new infrastructures and improve the existing ones.

Rana said, we are improving land as well as air accessibility. There will be two new international airports coming up by 2020 - one is in Lumbini called Gautam Buddha International Airport and the other one is Pokhara International Airport.

The senior NTB official said, despite the challenging phase after the devastating earthquake of 2015, tourist numbers to Nepal has grown steadily over the years.

Rana said, for the first time, more than a million tourists visited Nepal in 2018.

According to the data of 2018, tourist arrivals from Bangladesh amounted to 25,959 out of total number of 1,173,072 tourists.

Diwakar Rana said, NTB has been taking part in Dhaka Travel Marts (DTMs) for quite a few years but this year we came in a big way, becoming Partner Country of the international travel fair.

Visit Nepal Year 2020

Rana said, the Himalayan republic would be celebrating Visit Nepal Year in 2020. We are trying to attract as much visitors from tourist generating countries, both regional and long-haul, as we can.

Given the growing popularity of Nepal in Bangladesh with its historical ties, NOVOAIR DTM-2019 is an ideal platform for fresh promotions and visibility of Nepal as adventurous, safe and exciting destination.

Rana said, we provided latest information and updates to the outbound tour operators, travel agents as well as media people of Bangladesh.

The NTB official said, Nepal regards Bangladesh as an important tourist source market.

He said, Bangladesh and Nepal are not competitors. Rather they complement each other - one offering Himalayas and the other its sea beaches. Both countries' tour operators and travel agencies can cooperate to promote each other's country.

NTB on its part will be holding road shows in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet. NTB will be arranging familiarisation trips for both print and electronic media.

We will also be looking into consumer-focused campaigns with various media houses in Bangladesh, Rana said.

New spots

Rana said, the government of Nepal has identified 100 new destinations within the Himalayan country for tourism promotion.

Six hundred locations were selected on the basis of recommendations from local and provincial governments as well as NTB.

The ministry then called upon government bodies, private agencies and local people to develop and promote these destinations.
